Beginning from next term, all computers at schools in the Swiss canton of Geneva will be switched to Ubuntu Linux only.
Geneva newspaper Tribune de Geneve reports today that from September 2008 all computers at schools that currently are dual-boot MS Windows and Linux will have MS Windows removed and become FOSS (Free Open Source Software) only.
Besides lower costs for the administration, students will also profit from the use of Ubuntu, as they then will be able to use the same applications at home without additional cost.
Manuel Grandjean, director for the schools (Ecoles-Médias) IT services pointed out that the use of FOSS “…encourages participation and the democratization of knowledge and provides product independent competences…“. He also sees the use of FOSS as a “reinforcement of equal opportunities” for students.

Oh well, we used risc os until we were 13 and it never did us any harm :pI doubt the os market will be too affected, most school computers are so locked down it wouldn’t matter what os they were on. It would be interesting on how it would affect open office usage though.

This article’d be slightly better if it were 9001, but ah, well.Still, this has been predicted, though; the rise of free OSs in schools. As computers become more populous in education, so does the cost to buy Windows licenses for each one, or indeed, a group license. If Ubuntu is going to take mainstream, then why not teach people to use it before it becomes more common?

That’s great, being at Geneva myself I haven’t heard of it… I’m in last year so Ubuntu only won’t be for me, not that I use the school computers. But one thing that they should really do is fire those lazy incompetent library keepers, they’re 5 minutes late so I can’t borrow a dictionary and go away EXACTLY at 5pm, when I have to study, scan to damn books and go home, I’ll consult the books via Internet… paid to sit dammit.

In other news, Steve Ballmer declares war on Sweden for turning away from the world’s worst operating system. Trebuchets carrying over a dozen flaming chairs each have been seen milling slowly towards Sweden, their bloat slowing them down considerably and the flames on the chairs eventually shall cause the trebuchets to crash.Ballmer had this to say: “Linux is a #$^@%^$@% piece of $#@%$^$%.”

[...] These are only a couple of examples of the growing change to Gnu/Linux. According to a report (http://www.duvet-dayz.com/archives/2008/04/04/654/) nine thousand schools in Switzerland are no longer going to use Microsoft Windows. In Russia, they have planned to do the same thing (http://colombianflowers.wordpress.com/2007/10/09/using-linux-in-russia/). Microsoft windows products are being booted off computers all around the world. It is a growing trend. Probably most of the reason is for their fees (http://pcworld.about.com/news/Jun032002id101601.htm). It is the new trend for education. Are your children ready? Maybe your school system can save you tax dollars by converting to GNU/Linux. [...]

[...] 3. Schools or Universities doesn’t care Almost all university (including mine) doesn’t support open source. Ohhh really? Yah I can say it because there’s been no will on adapting the use of Linux based operating systems. Or just promoting the use of FOSS applications. Even though Ubuntu is quite popular with it’s easy to install and use. These schools doesn’t have the will to try or even install it as dual boot on their machines. The idea of costs is also blind to them. Lucky enough some students are more open minded to try some Linux distros for fun. Sadly these students are just the same number as my fingers. [...]

Ubuntu sounds good. Let children too grab the knowledge of Linux, but it is good have a dual boot.
