Climate-change experts at the UK Met Office predict that 2007 is likely to be the warmest year on record globally, hotter than the current record set in 1998.
The forecast points to the El Niño already established in the Pacific, that is expected to persist through the first months of 2007. Together with global warming due to fossil fuels this provides a high potential for record temperatures during 2007.
Over the previous seven years, the Met Office forecast of annual global temperature has proved remarkably accurate, with a mean forecast error size of just 0.06 °C.
