Society: Israel’s general strike and the soccer championship

img Middle East small Arial You might have seen in the news that this morning about 400,000 Israeli workers stopped working and started a general strike in the public sector. Within this strike all public service except Post offices, banks, telephones, the health sector and the defense sector are basically closed until further notice (sorry almost forgot, the stock exchange will stay open as well which surprisingly seems to be considered as an essential service in that country - hmmm…)

Anyway the strike was launched after thousands of municipal workers have not been paid for months and as one of the results of the strike there will be no public transport including international flights to and from the country. All flights are grounded - no wait - all but one…

With the European 2008 Soccer Championship qualifier between Israel and England scheduled to happen in Tel-Aviv this weekend, the trade union that has launched the strike will make one concession and allow the England soccer team together with their entourage to fly into Tel Aviv International Airport tomorrow.

Nevertheless thousands of English football fans could be prevented from flying into Israel if the strike continues - as expected - into the weekend.

It’s always good to get your priorities right - and wait - what would all those on strike like most (besides getting paid for their work) ?

Yes - watch the soccer game…

And thanks for your contribution to stop global warming and having hordes of English soccer fans flown around the planet.

There are really great pubs in the UK were you can watch the game. But in the UK you guys might get arrested for unsocial behavior when shouting too loud and this is of course after you’ve been granted access to your neighborhood pub by a fingerprint scanner at the door…
